The Tour

What to Expect

Black sand beaches, lava fields, and rhyolite mountains — seven days through the most dramatic scenery in Iceland's south.

Iceland South takes you through the volcanic heartland below the glaciers. Starting from Reykjavík, we ride Iceland's iconic south coast before turning inland to the remote Laki lava fields — over 100 volcanic craters strung across the landscape — and then deep into Fjallabak Nature Reserve to reach Landmannalaugar and the colourful rhyolite mountains that define it.

Seven days is the perfect introduction to Iceland's off-road riding. Demanding enough to feel real, short enough to fit a working week's leave on either side. A KTM 390 Adventure R rental is included — just fly in and ride.

Day by Day

The Itinerary

Day01
Arrival — Welcome to Iceland
Meet your fellow riders in Reykjavík as we pick up the bikes. Welcome briefing, then out for our first dinner and drinks together in the capital to kick off the adventure.

Day02
Golden Circle — Þingvellir & Brúarfoss
We ease into the ride with iconic stops along Iceland's Golden Circle — coffee at Þingvellir where the tectonic plates meet, then Brúarfoss, often called Iceland's bluest waterfall. In the afternoon we hit our first F-road, stopping at Gjáin and Háifoss waterfall on the way to our secluded cabin.

Day03
South Coast — Waterfalls & Black Sand Beach
We ride the south coast: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and the legendary Reynisfjara black sand beach with its basalt sea stacks. We also detour to the lesser-known Nauthúsafoss, hidden deep in a gorge. After reaching Vík, we head back inland on F-roads to the secluded valley of Þakgil — burgers in a cave for dinner.

Day04
Lava Fields of Laki
After restocking in Vík, we push into the remote Laki region — formed by a chain of over 100 volcanic craters. Your first major river crossings today as we tackle deep interior terrain. We overnight in a remote ranger hut, completely off-grid.

Before You Book

Need to Know

Riding Level Required
Some off-road experience required. You should be comfortable on loose gravel surfaces and willing to tackle river crossings. A good entry point to Iceland off-road riding — more accessible than Iceland Unleashed.
Bike Options
KTM 390 Adventure R rental is included in the tour price. Want to bring your own? We can coordinate shipping from UK, European, and North American ports — just let us know at booking.
Insurance
Comprehensive travel and riding insurance is mandatory. It must cover off-road riding, remote rescue, and medical evacuation. We can recommend providers if needed.
Weather
Iceland in August is the best window, but pack for everything. We've ridden in sun, horizontal rain, and sleet on the same day. Waterproof gear is non-negotiable.
Group Dynamics
Maximum 6 riders. We ride together, cook together, and look after each other in remote areas. Once we're in the Laki region or Fjallabak, there are no shops — just the group and the landscape.
Deposit & Payment
£500 deposit to secure your place. Balance due 10 weeks before departure. Payments via bank transfer. Full cancellation policy in our T&Cs.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked

If you're a confident rider with some off-road experience, you'll be fine. Iceland South is the most accessible of our tours — demanding enough to be real, but not extreme. If you're unsure, just get in touch and we'll give you an honest answer.
Yes. We have shipping arrangements from UK (Immingham), European ports (Rotterdam, Fredrikstad, Aarhus, Bremerhaven, Helsingborg), and North American ports (Portland, Maine or Halifax, Canada). Budget around £400–600 each way. Let us know at booking.
It happens, and we prepare for it. We brief every crossing beforehand, position ourselves to assist, and the support vehicle carries basic recovery kit. You'll need travel insurance covering riding — we'll tell you exactly what to look for.
No — it's usually cheaper and easier to book your own. We're happy to suggest options. Just don't book your return for the last morning of the tour.
It varies deliberately. Some nights are guesthouses with hot showers. Some nights are mountain huts — basic, but that's the point. The Þakgil cabins on day 3 are a highlight. We always tell you exactly what to expect.
Absolutely — and we'd encourage it. Reykjavík is worth a few days before or after. Iceland South overlaps with the first week of Iceland Unleashed, so some riders use it as a warm-up before joining the longer tour.
Beyond the tour package: flights, any extra accommodation nights, fuel for the bike, alcoholic drinks (budget £100–150), optional activities, and parking fees at tourist sites (around 700 ISK per stop). No surprises.
